Step Polishing for Metal Parts: Complete Coarse-Medium-Finish Polishing Process

For automated robotic polishing of metal components, skipping polishing stages is one of the main causes of poor surface quality and unstable gloss. Many manufacturers try to finish polishing in one single step, which leads to residual deep scratches, uneven surface texture and high reject rate. The standard multi-stage polishing workflow, coarse grinding → medium grinding → fine polishing, builds the surface layer by layer, and is the reliable solution to get consistent surface quality in batch production.

1. Coarse Grinding: Remove Defects & Build Uniform Baseline

This is the first step of the whole process. It removes casting skin, heavy burrs, deep cutting marks, oxide scale and surface pits. Select abrasive belts with coarse grit. The goal is not to pursue gloss, but to eliminate large surface defects and create a flat, uniform substrate for subsequent processing. Remaining scratches from coarse grinding must be fully erased in later steps.

2. Medium Grinding: Transition & Eliminate Coarse Scratches

Medium grinding acts as the critical transition link. It removes deep scratches generated during coarse grinding, reduces surface roughness steadily and homogenizes surface texture. Use medium-grit abrasive products. Do not jump this stage. If you skip medium grinding and go directly to fine polishing, deep scratches cannot be completely removed, and will remain visible on the final surface.

3. Fine Polishing: Refine Texture & Achieve Target Gloss

Fine polishing is the final finishing step. It wipes out fine grinding lines left after medium grinding, reduces Ra value and delivers the required gloss. Polishing wheels, stacked cloth wheels or folded airway cloth wheels are commonly used. This stage only removes tiny micro-scratches instead of large material volume. All parameters need stable control to avoid over-polishing and edge rounding.

Key Rules for Automated Batch Polishing

Never skip any stage in the process chain. Each polishing consumable matches its corresponding working procedure. Check consumable wear regularly and replace them before glazing or clogging. Adjust contact pressure and processing time according to metal types such as aluminum, stainless steel and mild steel. Fixed process grading ensures repeatable surface effect for every workpiece.
